What Is Macro Analysis in Trading (and Why It Matters)

By Mohamed Amine Sououdi, Founder · 5 min read

Macro analysis is the study of the big forces that move markets — interest rates, inflation, growth, the dollar, and risk sentiment. Where technical analysis reads the chart, macro reads the reasons behind it. The best traders use both: macro for direction and conviction, technicals for timing.

What it covers

The macro backdrop for any market is a handful of things: the path of interest rates, inflation, economic growth, central-bank stance, and whether investors are in a risk-on or risk-off mood. Each market responds to its own mix — gold to real yields, indices to growth and rates, currencies to relative policy.

How it differs from technicals

Technicals are about probability and levels; macro is about context and conviction. A technical setup with the macro wind behind it is far higher quality than the same setup fighting the fundamentals. Macro is what tells you which side of a level to favour.

How to use it without overtrading

Macro is a backdrop, not a trigger. You do not need to trade every headline — in fact, news within hours often reverses and nets to noise. Use macro to set your bias and size, and let your technical setup handle entries.
